AKIRS URGES FRSC TO INCREASE LICENCE ENFORCEMENT FOR SAFETY OF BUSINESSES

The Executive Chairman, of Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service, AKIRS, Sir Okon Okon, has urged the new Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the State to invigorate check and enforcement of vehicle and driver's licenses to uphold the security and safety of businesses in the State.

Sir Okon made the call on Tuesday 9th when the new Sector Commander of the Corps, Commander Lasisi Ogundele, paid him a courtesy call at the revenue house, Uyo, saying, AKIRS will partner with FRSC to ensure the security and safety of all business people in the state who rely on road transportation.

He said the state government is working affectionately to create a safe and secure business environment, hence there is a need for FRSC to strengthen its collaboration with AKIRS to ensure that transporters who help in the movement of goods and services are licensed.

“I call on the FRSC to step up enforcement on compliance of road taxes, this will not only ensure that vehicles on the road are manned by certified licenced drivers, but we will ensure that we have only licensed vehicles operating in our business sector. That will enhance the security and safety within the sector."

Okon said AKIRS will partner with the Corps in creating awareness to reduce the incidence of unclaimed licenses.
“We have discussed and agreed with FRSC that some measures of enlightenment and sensitisation be put in place for drivers who registered but have not collected their motor licences to pick them up. Also, we will work out an enforcement drive to ensure that there is compliance, and that will help us in reducing the backlog of unclaimed driver’s licences. This is also for security in the State. With a driver’s licence you can track who is on our roads, aside from the revenue component of it.”, he noted.

The Chairman welcomed Commander Ogundele and wished him a successful working experience in the State.
The Sector Commander, Lasisi Ogundele, said there were 5,000 unclaimed driver's licences with the Corps, a situation he hinted the FRSC was willing to collaborate with AKIRS to address.

Ogundele thanked Sir Okon for the warm reception accorded him and his team, he also appealed to AKIRS to reposition motor licensing hubs for greater efficiency.
